I am purchasing a home in France in Dec., 2010. I am seeking information on whether it is more adventages to declare it as a second home or my permanent home, as far as income taxes, medical insurance, shipping a container of household goods, etc. I live in the USA and derive all my income from the USA. I also receive Social security from home. I will keep an American address here as well as a bank account so that I can transfer money to my French bank. Thank you.

I agree it is crucial to get some help from qualified professionals when relocating to France. On the legal side of things, I recommend using the services of a bilingual French Solicitor. My wife and I were very impressed with the one we instructed: htp://www.solicitor.fr

Avoid relying on notaires for property transaction, as they only get paid if the sale goes ahead, which is a temptation to let their impartiality slip.
